Abstract. The paper considers the issues of professional labor determination of the youth in the Republic of Mordovia; a sociological portrait of young working people is given. The empirical bases of the study were the results of sociological research conducted by the authors in 2005 and 2015. Special

attention is paid to interaction of the labor market and the market of educational services in the region.

Synopsis. Introduction: the changing social structure in the transforming Russian society speeds up the processes of social differentiation of the younger generation in Russia. Along with the increasing number of risk groups, there is an increase in the number of young people willing to build up their social resources and competitiveness through augmentation of educational, informational, and cultural capital.

Materials and Methods: the study used the 2005 questionnaire survey "Youth in the Meager Income Regions" conducted by the Institute for Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the 2015 questionnaire survey conducted within the framework of the project "Transformation Processes in the Regional Youth Sub-Society" by the staff of the Department of Sociology and the Research Institute for Regionology of the Mordovia State University. A comparative analysis of the results of the studies was given; the factorial and structural and functional analysis were also used.

Results: peculiarities of socio-professional orientation of the youth in the Republic of Mordovia were revealed. For a certain part of the youth, inflated, not supported by the required professional competencies expectations about earnings and working conditions are typical. Aspiration to financial independence and the need to take care of the family determine the attitude of the youth to their work. It is noted, that about half of the respondents intend to leave their region in search for decent wages.

Discussion and Conclusions: the study of vocational status of young people in the region show that, firstly, for the significant part of young people, the value of labor is determined by the level of wages and the possibility of self-fulfillment is less significant. Secondly, half of those interviewed does not work in their vocational fields. At the same time, for a part of the youth, inflated, not supported by the required professional competencies expectations about earnings and working conditions are typical. Thirdly, the direct correlation between dissatisfaction with the level of wages and the negative attitude toward the chiefs was not revealed, which reflects the conformist sentiments of the respondents. Fourthly, there is a decrease in the number of those wishing to be engaged in commerce. Fifthly, despite the reduction in the number of potential migrants, half of those interviewed intend to change the place of residence in search for a decent job.
